Job Title: Bus Monitor
Primary Purpose:
Ride buses and help driver ensure safe and orderly transportation of students.
Qualifications:
- Monitor students' behavior to maintain a safe and orderly environment on the bus
- Speak and act with authority to ensure passengers of all ages follow instructions, supporting safety for everyone
- Be well-versed in proper emergency protocols should an accident or other incident occur
- Communicate with parents, guardians, teachers or other adults on the bus
- Record rider attendance or detail incidents that occur on the bus
- Provide support for special needs riders in some situations

Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
Ability to work well with children with disabilities
Experience:
Previous experience working with children.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Student Management
- Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
- Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street.
- Take children into building and help them find their way.
- Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
- Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on bus.
Routes and Schedules
- Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver.
- Maintain an updated route schedule.
Safety
- Supervise use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seats by students.
- Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary.
- Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, assisting students, etc.
Other
- Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices.
- Help driver keep bus clean.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Equipment Used:
Wheelchair lift, ramp, lock, and special needs adaptive equipment if applicable.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Operate two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher
Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling
Motion: Prolonged sitting; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching
Lifting: Lifting and carrying on a daily basis
Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; regularly work irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
