Transcriptionist / Project Manager (Part-time)

Axiom is seeking a remote, part-time, dual-role Transcriptionist (33 hours/month) / Project Manager (30 hours/month).

Axiom is seeking support to implement a socioeconomic survey in the Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and to pursue sociocultural research efforts across in the Pacific Islands Region (which includes the islands of American Samoa, Guam, the CNMI, and the State of Hawai'i).

Transcriptionist Duties (33 hours/month) Includes:

• Transcription of recorded interviews that relate to, but are not limited to activities supporting unstructured and oral history interviews, community engagement activities, and workshops.
• Transcribing interviews that contain localized dialects and references to local place names and regions across the Pacific Islands Region.
• Transcription of interviews from other research projects including interviews with fishers, researchers, and community members on broad topics including, but not limited to, describing the diverse benefits that seafood provides island communities, cultural dimensions of fishing, and aspects of community resilience.
• Provide verbatim transcriptions of semi-structured audio or video interview files.
• Organize media (audio, video, software) and processed documents (Microsoft Word) files in native formats under logical file structure, in collaboration with Project Lead.
• Develop necessary metadata associated with audio and video files, in collaboration with Project Lead.
• Provide draft transcription documents, and associated metadata to the project lead to allow for feedback and iterative changes and modifications to the product (e.g., confirm interviewer(s) and interviewee(s) attributions, etc.)
• Provide final verbatim transcription products, and associated metadata in appropriate formats (e.g., Microsoft Word, etc.)
• Monthly progress report to include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: accomplishments, issues encountered, travel (including purpose, significant outcomes, action items), and recommendations, if applicable.

It is estimated approximately 50 hours of recorded audio and/or video in any given year. Approximately 30% of the audio may be group recordings (multiple speakers) or under challenging recording conditions (e.g., windy, background noise) which will likely require additional time associated with transcriptions under these conditions.

Project Manager Duties (30 hour/month) Include:

• Fieldwork support of a multi-year funded research project that seeks to identify the pathways and the types of seafood flowing through U.S. territories in the Pacific Islands Region, and improve our understanding of the benefits of seafood to island communities, including underserved populations.
• Develop plans for community outreach, engagement, and project implementation for seafood value chain research.
• Develop data management plan, documentation, and supporting metadata
• Develop and execute stakeholder consultation plan to socialize and gather feedback on the cultural relevance of methodology to qualify and quantify the benefits of fishing and seafood to community members (methodology will be drafted by Project Lead).
• Characterize the seafood value chain and detail the benefits provided across different levels of the seafood value chain (from harvester to consumer groups)
• Develop report that fully describes final survey implementation methods, any deviations from the original plans (challenges overcome), timelines, number of individuals participating in the effort (by value chain level, by island(s) of study area), key results (e.g., key themes from interviews, if conducted), and any data cleaning protocols.
• Support socioeconomic data collection and interpretation
• Provide draft engagement plan and outreach materials to project lead to allow for feedback and iterative changes and modifications to the products.
• Provide final products in appropriate formats, including interview documentation (interviewee list, applicable audio/photo files, interviewer notes, consent form, and final transcript review) and native files (Excel, Adobe Illustrator, Word, or Photoshop, etc.) used for any outreach materials and/or to correspond with local stakeholders or interviewees.
• Social science outreach and engagement with quarterly updates
• Regularly touch base (monthly) for approximately one-hour meeting to coordinate with other local NMFS staff, providing support for synergistic work.
• Monthly progress report to include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: accomplishments, issues encountered, travel (including purpose, significant outcomes, action items), and recommendations, if applicable.

Qualifications

Transcription

• Proficiency with commercial transcription software.
• Knowledge and experience with conversational styles and dialects, common expressions, proper spelling of local conversational dialects, references, concepts, place names and communities across the Pacific Islands Region.
• Preferred - Minimum of three to five (3-5) years of experience in formal transcription.
• Preferred - Experience with marine and/or community-based projects across the Pacific Islands Region

Project Manager

• Documented experience working with members of the fishing and/or seafood marketing communities, preferably in the relevant study area.
• Documented experience gathering fishery data and/or soliciting and summarizing input from fishing and/or seafood marketing communities, preferably in the relevant study area.
• Proficiency in digital word processing and data storage/management programs, such as those available in the Google or Microsoft suite.
• Familiarity with marine species and seafood products commonly found in local markets or shared within the local community.
• Keen awareness and respect for local culture and customs, initiative, and an ability to find solutions to unforeseen challenges.
• Bachelor's degree in relevant field
