Description

Installs and troubleshoots Automated Meter Reader (AMR) meters to automatically collect consumption of residential and commercial water meters. Performs tests to calibrate equipment to ensure water meters are functioning accurately. Performs a variety of routine manual tasks for the utilities divisions in such areas as installing, maintaining, disconnection and removal of new residential and commercial water meters.
Examples of Duties

1. Reads and records consumption of residential and commercial water meters using computerized meter reading equipment on assigned routes; verifies that readings are within acceptable parameters.
2. Performs various troubleshooting technics and analyze issues in the field.
3. Install new water meters; record meter and account information and initiates new service by programing water meter when necessary.
4. Repairs leaks on water meters by replacing washers, tightening connections and replacing fittings; perform pressure check of service lines; removes defective register installs new register when necessary.
5. Turn off / Lock meters for non- payment.
6. Replaces missing or broken water meter lids and boxes.
7. Assists with repairs and maintenance of water meter vaults and lids, ensuring safe access and operation.
8. Assist with test and repairs of residential, commercial meters of various sizes.
9. Work closely with water office; learn and understand the needs of utility billing.
10. Perform maintenance work related to water meter operations in a safe and efficient manner.
11. Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, laptop; drives City vehicles to work sites, transport materials and assists other staff as required.
12. Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and City staff; act in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
13. Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Good knowledge of the methods and procedures used in reading meters.
2. Good knowledge of meter service operating procedures.
3. Good knowledge of the geographical layout of the City and the location of meters
4. Good knowledge of assigned route
5. Good knowledge of basic arithmetic
6. Good knowledge of safe work practices
7. Good knowledge of operational characteristics of water meters
8. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel
9. Good knowledge of principles and procedures of customer service.
10. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
11. Ability to read and accurately record meter readings
12. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public
13. Ability to learn troubleshooting methods and techniques to analyze problems in field.
14. Ability to read maps and locate addresses
15. Ability to work in the field under adverse weather conditions and to stand and walk for long periods of time
16. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision
17. Ability to utilize computer hardware and software relating to work and field equipment.
18. Ability to learn to operate associated software systems quickly and efficiently.
19. Ability to create and distribute multiple reports through the utility billing software system
20. Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
21. Ability to maintain consistent attendance.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Must have high school diploma/GED
• Possession of a valid Class C Texas driver license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Water meter reading experience preferred
