Description

Performs supervisory duties involving progressively responsible experience with the coordination of crews engaged in the maintenance and repairs of parks - including but not limited to landscaping, equipment, athletics facilities, and recreation/special events.
Examples of Duties

  1. Under limited oversight, identifies work to be performed as prioritized and outlined by the Park Services Supervisor.
  2. Holds responsibility for the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of Parks' crews work.
  3. Plans and assigns work based on set goals and priorities.
  4. Schedules, assigns, directs, monitors and assists the work of employees and use of equipment engaged in maintaining parks, athletic facilities, recreation activities, and special events.
  5. Responsible for supervising and organizing the work of and assuring the technically correct and safety appropriate functions performed by crew members, both semi-skilled and unskilled workers within the division
  6. Establishes policies, methods and procedures to be followed by work crews
  7. Inspects activities of work crews and ensures proper quality of work and efficiency and economy of operation
  8. Provides to subordinates coaching that aligns with the City's Core Values of service, teamwork, accountability, commitment and integrity, and the City's mission, vision, and policies
  9. Assists with employee evaluations
  10. Take proper and required disciplinary action as needed, including but not limited to verbal/written warnings
  11. Interviews and makes recommendations for staff recruitment and selection.
  12. Maintains and repairs park playground units, benches, tables, etc.
  13. Administers internal safety program
  14. Maintains a variety of operational records
  15. Monitors equipment utilization and maintenance, recommends replacements, and may participate in the preparation of specifications for and the acquisition of equipment
  16. Requisitions, purchases and/or maintain supplies
  17. Refers to city maps, blueprints, or manuals.
  18. Coordinates and communicates with other employees, subordinates, supervisors, stakeholders, contractors and residents.
  19. Provides customer service to residents and customers offering information about services or departmental policies and procedures and resolving any complaints. On occasion, may deal with irate or hostile people.
  20. Serves as acting Park Services Supervisor in the event of the Supervisor's absence as needed.
  21. Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Knowledge of the City's and Department's operating requirements, policies, procedures, and practices; and local, state, and federal regulations related to department programs and operations.
  2. Knowledge of principles and practices of budgeting, fiscal management, project management principles and techniques.
  3. Ability to effectively utilize the principles of strategic and long and short-range planning.
  4. Skill in analyzing information and issues, defining problems and evaluating alternatives, and recommending methods, procedures and techniques for resolution of issues.
  5. Ability to research and analyze detailed information and make appropriate recommendations.
  6. Ability to follow oral and written instructions are generally broad using judgment to select the appropriate procedures to follow.
  7. Ability to develop department goals and objectives.
  8. Ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate projects and programs.
  9. Ability to prepare, recommend and monitor an operating budget, including line item budgeting.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
  11. Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  12. Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.
  13. Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.
  14. Knowledge of management and supervisory practices & principles, including the ability to make final employment recommendations, preparing performance evaluations, managing time off, and maintaining personnel records.
  15. Ability to adapt and take control of situations, dictating subordinate activities in a responsible manner.
  16. Ability to instruct and train in methods and procedures.
  17. Knowledge of current office practices and procedures and knowledge of the operation of standard office equipment and software.
  18. Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.
  19. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively in English in both written and verbal form.
  20. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports.
  21. Ability to apply sound judgment and discretion in performing duties, resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.

  23. Ability to handle sensitive interpersonal situations calmly and tactfully.
  24. Ability to maintain professionalism at all times.
  25. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with individuals within and outside the organization.

  27. Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and respond after hours as needed.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have high school diploma/GED.
  • At least three (3) years combined work experience in general maintenance, park maintenance, turf management, and/or park operations, preferred
  • At least three (3) years of experience involved in supervision of others OR any combination of education and experience leading to the same level of knowledge and skills
  • Must have valid commercial driver's license at time of placement or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Must have driving record sufficient for coverage by City's auto liability carrier
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • License to perform weed/pest control or the ability to obtain.
  • License to install and maintain irrigation systems
