Position Overview: The Communications and Media Manager plays a central role in increasing the organization's visibility and advancing its mission through strategic communications, media outreach, and compelling content creation. This position is responsible for developing and executing public relations and multimedia marketing strategies, managing media relationships, and producing engaging content across audio, video, and written formats. This position develops and executes integrated communication strategies that elevate the organization's voice, strengthen brand presence, and engage key audiences.

The ideal candidate brings a strong blend of creativity, design sensibility, media and social media expertise, along with a working understanding of conservation and agriculture. They excel at translating complex issues into clear, inclusive, and impactful messaging that resonates with diverse audiences and across political perspectives, while maintaining credibility, accuracy, and mission alignment.

Amount of Time & Status: 40 hours a week, exempt, Monday-Friday

Location: This position is remote with preference given to residents in the American West. Periodic travel will be required.

Reports to: Communications Director

Compensation: $70,000-$85,000. Salary is commensurate with experience. Duties/Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and execute media outreach strategies, including pitching stories to television, radio, podcasts, and print/digital outlets.
  • Create engaging PR content that builds WLA's reputation for non-partisan expertise and landowner-led conservation for diverse media channels, tailoring messaging to different audiences while reflecting WLA's mission and voice.
  • Manage social media channels, including content creation, scheduling, monitoring, and audience engagement.
  • Design digital assets and advertising content using Canva (or similar platform).
  • Monitor and track media coverage, engagement, and analytics to measure impact and refine communications strategies.
  • Produce engaging content across multiple platforms, including blogs, articles, op-eds, audio, video, and graphics that tell WLA's story and inspire action.
  • Collaborate with leadership to align communications strategies with organizational goals and contribute to PR campaign planning, including through research and awareness of media trends in our key audience segments.
  • Work closely with WLA's communications team to coordinate communications efforts, messaging and content production.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational communications efforts and outreach initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years experience in communications, marketing, public relations or related field.
  • Knowledge and/or working experience with agriculture, grazing, livestock, grassland or rangeland issues.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating email, social media, earned media and digital marketing campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain media relationships and to pitch stories effectively.
  • Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, including writing, editing, and graphic design.
  • Familiarity with data collection methods such as surveys, polls, and focus groups, and ability to apply insights to communications strategies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of modern digital marketing and communications techniques, tools, and best practices.
  • Comfortable learning new technologies quickly; flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Team-oriented, collaborative, and enthusiastic about contributing to organizational goals.
  • Passionate about the landscapes of the West and the role of private land stewardship in protecting them.
  • Experience creating content for multiple media platforms, including print, digital, audio, and video, and tailoring messaging for different audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage effectively with a diverse array of stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to set, prioritize, and achieve strategic short- and long-term goals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and cloud-based file sharing systems.

Working Environment/Physical Activities: Work environment is an office setting and outdoors. Physical activities include sitting at a desk and working on a keyboard and computer several hours a day; conducting business over the telephone and via email; standing for long periods of time; traveling long distances by vehicle (including traveling on unpaved roads), and operating recording/photography equipment in rugged/remote ranch and rangeland settings in various weather conditions. This position may also require moving organization materials weighing up to 25 pounds. This position also requires facilitation of meetings and interfacing professionally with the public.
