Position Overview

The Building Inspections Department Manager is responsible for overseeing the full lifecycle of residential engineering projects, from planning through execution, while leading a team of project managers and code compliance inspectors. This role ensures that all residential services are delivered in alignment with engineering best practices, safety regulations, and quality standards. The manager provides technical oversight on proposals, reports, and field operations, while also tracking departmental performance, budgets, and forecasts. In addition to operational responsibilities, this role supports business development through client engagement and community involvement. The ideal candidate is a strong leader who promotes a positive work culture, drives team development, and ensures project success through hands-on field support and strategic planning.

Responsibilities
  • Keeps records of personnel transactions such as timesheets, benefits, new hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews, and terminations; forwards necessary documentation to the Human Resources Department and/or Payroll for recordkeeping purposes.
  • Interviews and selects employees to fill vacant positions
  • Review clerical and personnel records to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timelines
  • Responds and/or investigates employee inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs
  • Perform Structural Building Inspection duties (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing as licensed)
  • Inspect commercial and residential buildings, which are under construction or are being repaired, remodeled or enlarged and is performed during various stages of completion to ensure structural integrity and compliance with building codes/ordinances
  • Manages building inspectors, plan reviewers, quality control inspectors, project coordinators, and administrative assistants
  • Determines whether changes may be required in plans and makes recommendations to contractors, engineers, architects, etc.
  • Performs inspections of foundations, concrete slabs, framing, roofing, and related construction work
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and current inspection records
  • Exercises tact and courtesy when conducting inspections, and communicating with clients
  • Prepare reports and report data in a complete, timely and understandable fashion and return them as required to the branch office
  • Complete daily time and labor reports in accordance with company policy
  • Ensure that project requirements are met and compliant with inspection specifications, requirements, and company policies or procedures
  • Travel to various job sites at locations both locally and throughout the State of Florida
  • Regular attendance is required
  • Follows safety procedures
  • Other duties may be assigned
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Required: ICC B1, WACEL Foundation or ACI Reinforced Concrete
  • Preferred: ICC M1, P1, and E1
  • 6+ years of residential or related code compliance experience
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills
  • Strong technical knowledge of safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals
  • Experience with budgets, forecasts, and financial management.
  • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Operational and project management experience
  • Experience in overseeing code compliance inspections
  • Ability to evaluate Request for Proposals, attend site meetings or converse with potential clients to develop a scope of services and associated cost estimate
  • Understand companies goals and objectives and execute accordingly
  • Understanding of human resource management principles, practices and procedures
  • Strong leadership skills; strong and proven work ethic
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and correct operational issues
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language
  • Highly self-motivated, self-directed and attentive to detail

Travel Requirements

This position requires moderate travel, approximately up to 40% of the time, in support of business objectives and client engagements. Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may be conducted in outdoor or operational environments. Adherence to all company safety protocols and use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions such as precipitation, extreme cold or heat, dusty and noisy work environments.
  • Office work requiring long-term sitting and computer work
    • The position may involve sitting for extended periods, performing data entry, and engaging in frequent communication via email, phone, and in-person interactions.
    • The role involves regular communication with team members, clients, and stakeholders, both in person and through virtual platforms.
    • The physical demands of the job may include occasional standing, walking, bending, and lifting of office materials up to 15 pounds.
  • The physical requirements for this position may include and are not limited to:
    • Ability to lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs
    • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time as well as drive long distances
    • Frequent use of fingers, hands and arms for typing, cellphone
    • Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, pull, kneel, lift, carry, and push repetitively
    • Ability to speak and hear effectively to communicate sometimes with noisy environments
    • Ability to see, smell, hear and touch as well as reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit
    • Ability to regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 40lbs. (soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus); frequently lift and/or move up to 60lbs. (soil and sand samples, and nuclear density equipment); and occasionally move more than 100lbs. (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples)
