Job Title: Family Literacy Coordinator

Retirees of the Texas Teachers Retirement System (TRS) may apply. Consistent with district policy SD-7.17 "Employment of Retirees," selected applicants are responsible for reimbursing the district, through payroll deduction, for the current rate of all TRS pension or TRS Care surcharges. As of September 1, 2025, the TRS pension surcharge rate is 16.5% and the TRS Care surcharge is $535/month.

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Pay Group: S65 Salary Plan

Primary Purpose: Facilitate a family literacy program for incarcerated parents with economically disadvantaged school-age children by providing opportunities for the incarcerated parent to become an effective, supportive, active partner in his or her child's education with the goal of eliminating the potential for generational incarceration and increasing student growth of both the parent and child.

Qualifications

Education/Certification/Experience:

Bachelor's degree from a college/university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE) with major coursework in education, psychology, social work, criminal justice, counseling or a related field.

Three years full-time, wage-earning experience in criminal justice, education, job placement or case work services.

This position requires personal technology that will enable the completion of job duties and responsibilities when working remotely.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to present information on human growth and development and effective parenting strategies.

Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to convey ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.

Skill in developing record keeping systems, and in organizing and maintaining accurate records.

Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills within a diverse community.

Ability to maintain a broad knowledge of early childhood, middle, high school and adult education, post-secondary, and career related reintegration opportunities.

Basic knowledge of criminal justice system preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Provide parenting skills, human growth and development and reading strategies courses to equip incarcerated parents to be an active, knowledgable partner in their child's education.

2. Assess and monitor the progress of students identified as underserved populations.

3. Coordinate effectively and collaboratively with public schools to involve incarcerated parents in virtual, telephonic or written parent-teacher conferences.

4. Develop and provide professional development activities.

5. Research, evaluate, and recommend resources, software, and curriculum to meet the needs of family literacy participants.

6. Travel or participate in virtual conferences with program partners.

7. Coordinate the implementation of specialized projects and programs as assigned.

8. Perform additional duties as assigned.

13. Maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive information received in the performance of the job duties.

14. Perform duties in a professional manner through daily, punctual attendance at location of work assignment.

15. Follow Windham School District policies and procedures in completing assigned job duties.

16. Execute duties in a professional, ethical and responsible manner as defined in 19 TAC Chapter 247, Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.

Environmental Demands:

Work inside and outside, noise, radiant/electrical energy, work alone, work with others, around machines with moving parts and objects, possible exposure to microwaves in use, exposure to hot and cold temperatures, exposure to dust and cleaning chemicals.
