Overview
Austin College invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Education with a disciplinary focus in elementary-level curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Candidates with additional expertise in educational leadership, learning theory and science, or learning technologies will be especially considered. A PhD or EdD must be in hand before the position begins in August 2026. Candidates must have a proven record of at least three years of successful teaching experience in an Early Childhood – 6th grade classroom.
Department and program context
The Education Department offers a Minor in Education and prepares future teachers for EC-12 certification through the Master of Arts in Teaching. In fall 2026, two new majors in Elementary and Secondary Education will be offered to prepare teachers for certification through an undergraduate pathway. The position will play a key role in curriculum design and delivery for these new degrees.
Teaching responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate (Master's) courses in Education and Society; instructional methods for elementary social studies and science; classroom design for learner success; responsive pedagogy; and research and assessment for teachers. An additional assignment will include either learning theory and science or leadership for educators, depending on the candidate's secondary area of expertise.
Load and service expectations
The standard 9-month teaching load is three courses per semester, plus a three-week January Term course every other year, and a First-Year Seminar every fourth year. Faculty are also expected to participate in campus service, faculty governance, and to mentor students as academic advisors. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to innovative teaching in a liberal arts environment and to fostering student engagement and belonging in the classroom through pedagogy.
