Position Summary

This position will be responsible for performing routine blood drawing procedures including but not limited to proper collection of venous and capillary specimens. Responsible for registration of blood screening documents. Maintain flow of work orders. Conduct periodic audit of blood culture techniques utilized. Coordinate phlebotomy staff, delegate outstanding work assignments and interface with nursing services to resolve patient order issues or concerns. The lead phlebotomist will assist the Lab Director and Phlebotomy Supervisor with training of new staff, assessment of phlebotomy competency, education on departmental policy, and complete problem reports for patient collections. Monitor the effectiveness of staff training, perform and train new hires on patient registration, and may serve as the Lab liaison on selected hospital workgroups. Serve as specimen courier as needed.

Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED, or highest level of education. Reading and numerical competency. Training and certification from accredited phlebotomy program required. Some college coursework preferred: (e.g., Medical Terminology, Microbiology and Medical billing) Minimum of two (2) years of previous experience demonstrating progressive growth in responsibility. Certification as a Phlebotomist through the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) strongly preferred. Proof of High School Diploma or equivalent required on hire. Must have the ability to learn the applicable computer programs as needed. Must demonstrate knowledge and skill in obtaining laboratory specimens from all age groups. Must have excellent verbal communication and listening skills, as well as written skills. Must have moderate complex testing after initial training and assessment at six-months. Expectation that you can perform both waived and moderate complexity testing using Point of Care devices during code blue/trauma, or as needed in other areas. Must demonstrate commitment to a positive team operation and work environment. Demonstrate the ability to consistently use good judgement in directing resources to achieve goals in a timely manner, with superior service excellence skills.
