Job Summary

Manages day-to-day operations of the Investigations Unit. Objectives are to professionally support, assist, and facilitate the prosecution team in the successful disposition of criminal and civil cases under the jurisdiction of the District Attorney. Support activities include completing investigations; obtaining discovery from law enforcement partners; preparing trial exhibits; testifying when needed; locating and maintaining custody of evidence; obtaining local jurisdictions' offense reports that involve the victim, defendant, and witnesses; locating victims and witnesses and serving subpoenas to secure the attendance of those witnesses; interviewing witnesses and involved parties; examining crime scenes; and writing detailed reports; investigating allegations of criminal activity that are brought directly to the District Attorney's Office; and provides assistance to other local law enforcement agencies when requested.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a job classification within the POPS job family and is considered a management position. Duties require substantial degree of initiative and independent judgment necessary to take control of dynamic situations. This classification requires a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees and coordinates Executive Protection.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of any goal, objective, policies or procedures for the unit.
  • Manages and coordinates the personnel, equipment, control and integrity of the evidence room.
  • Supervises the work and performance of investigators, including training new personnel and making recommendations for new hires, disciplinary actions, and dismissals.
  • Monitors firearm training and qualification of investigators to ensure that standards set by the Texas
  • Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for investigators are met; schedules training and/or testing as needed

  • Serves as liaison between the District or County Attorney's Office and interested and/or involved law enforcement agencies on cases assigned to specialized units. Represents the unit by attending county and community meetings.

  • Assists with all duties that are assigned to a District Attorney Investigator or Sr. Investigator.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice AND five (5) years of investigative and law enforcement officer experience, including at least three (3) years of supervisory experience.

Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.



Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
Intermediate certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Executive Protection
  • Penal Code, and the Code of Criminal Procedure, Rules of Evidence, Family Code, Civil Statutes, Regulatory Agency Codes, TCOLE Standards and Education Regulations
  • Brady Rules and Compliance with the Michael Morton Act
  • Management principles and applications, especially in a law enforcement and legal government

Skill in:

  • Supervisory/management issues, including planning and managing teams.
  • Effective interviewing techniques, including the art of communicating effectively with people of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Use of firearms.
  • Planning and coordinating work activities.
  • Problem solving and decision making.
  • Researching, analyzing, compiling, preparing and presenting technical data/information and reports.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Work on a wide variety of tasks simultaneously and produce timely and tangible results.
  • Prioritize needs, develop and implement plans of action.
  • Motivate, train, supervise; develop subordinate professional employees.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and officials, attorneys, court personnel, representatives of law enforcement agencies, and the general public.
Work Environment & Other Information

Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 5-10 pounds occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard, typewriter and basic office equipment. Subject to standing, walking, reaching, grasping and handling to perform essential functions.

Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such, employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.

Work Hours: 8 am - 5 pm, Monday -Friday. May work some

holidays, some nights, some weekends
